Welcome...
James McCarthy
ABNLP, BIH
I am an NLP Practitioner specialising in treating people with emotional, motivational and other psychological difficulties. I also use CBT techniques within therapy so that I am able to offer a wider range of treatments to suit the needs of the individual. These cognitive treatments, NLP ( Neuro Linguistic Programming ) and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy)are effective at treating emotional and behavioural problems.
What does 'Cognitive' mean?
Cognitive is a broad term which, refers to the way a person interprets situations, as well as thoughts, images and attitudes. Basically, the way a person thinks about or interprets an event affects their mood and their behaviour. A person can alter the way he or she feels and behaves by altering the way they interpret the situation. This does not mean thinking positively. Instead, it refers to the person closely examining his interpretation, to see if it is based in reality or is a self-defeating way of looking at life. Along with this, the person learns how to expose their belief systems and old unconscious rules that they live by and that govern the way they think and behave. Some of these beliefs and rules may no longer be appropriate and are in need of change for the health and wellbeing of the person. CBT and NLP show you how to do this.
Why have therapy?
Most of us may, at times, wish that we could change the way we live our lives. On occasion we ‘sabotage’ ourselves without realising it, so we never quite achieve our hopes and dreams. We can find ourselves repeating patterns of behaviour and wondering ‘how did I get here again?’ Unconsciously, we defend against our basic fears in ways which may be ineffective or even harmful, causing relationship difficulties and leading to such feelings as anger, confusion, isolation, or low self esteem. During NLP, CBT, and life-coaching sessions in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, you will explore your thought pattern and subsequently your behaviour to identify what needs to change and how to do so. Once you have mastered these techniques you will be able to move on from negative beliefs and behaviours leaving you open to explore new options in life. And with these new skills you can become your very own therapist.
What therapy should I have?
There are many different types of therapy and often it is hard to know which one to choose. Once you have decided you want therapy my advice is to either consult your GP or explore all therapies until you find one that suits you. Many clients say to me they have tried one or two and they did not work for them. I say keep trying until you find the one that does work for you.CBT and NLP are solution-focused techniques that focus on the ‘here and now’. Unlike other talking treatments, the focus is not on the cause of your distress or symptoms in the past, it is focused on the present, therefore, you will learn to improve your state of mind right now.
How to choose a therapist?
This is always a difficult choice as it is vital that you feel comfortable with the therapist. After all you will be discussing personal and sometimes painful issues with effectively a complete stranger. My advice would be go for the consultation and see how you feel with the chosen therapist. After all you are under no obligation to return and most therapist’s do not charge for the initial meeting.
